    Pacific MWP: No. 4 Pacific Finishes Seventh At MPSF Tournament, Defeats No. 9 Pepperdine, 13-5

    Following a one point lead heading into the third quarter, Pacific's men's water polo team tallied nine goals in the second half to defeat No. 9 Pepperdine, 13-5. With the win the Tigers improved to 17-11 (4-4 MPSF) on the, while Pepperdine fell to 9-18 (1-7 MPSF) on the year.

    Entering the second quarter with the game tied at two all, Pacific's defense held Pepperdine scoreless for nearly four minutes before the Waves took the 3-2 lead at the 4:03 mark. However Tom Koning (Poway, Calif.) responded on the counter attack with a goal 19 seconds later. With :50 left in the half, Pacific then took the two point advantage on a goal from Balazs Szabo (Budapest, Hungary). In the final seconds the Waves took the ball to Pacific's end of the pool looking for an opportunity to even up the score but Alex Malkis(Yoqneam, Israel) came away with a block at the 10 second mark to preserve Pacific's one point lead.

    Pacific started off the third quarter taking the 5-3 lead 39 seconds in on Erelyi's second goal of the contest. The Waves responded on the counter attack, notching their fourth goal of the contest to stay within one of Pacific. Following Pepperdine's goal, Pacific gained a six point lead with five uninterrupted goals. During Pacific's 5-0 run in the quarter, Goran Tomasevic(Split, Croatia) tallied a pair of goals while Gullikson, Balazs Szabo (Budapest, Hungary) and Tom Koning (Poway, Calif.) found the back of the net once.

    In the final frame, Pacific extended its lead to eight on back-to-back goals from Tomasevic and Gullikson at the 7:21 and 6:25 marks respectively. With 4:38 remaining in regulation junior Joey Frantz (Chicago, Ill.) entered the game to replace Malkis in the cage. The Waves then found the back of the net for the final time on a goal from Danny White to cut Pacific's lead to seven. However junior Lance Morrison (Fairfield, Calif.) responded with the Tigers' final goal with 24 seconds left on the clock for a13-5 final score.

    Pacific was led by Goran Tomasevic (Split, Croatia) who scored three goals for Pacific. Also tallying goals for the Tigers wereBalazs Erdelyi (Eger, Hungary), Joey Gullikson (Sonoma, Calif.),Tom Koning (Poway, Calif.), Balazs Szabo (Budapest, Hungary),Austin Delong (Houston, Texas) and Lance Morrison (Fairfield, Calif.). Alex Malkis (Yoqneam, Israel) had 10 saves thru three and half quarters for the Tigers while Joey Frantz (Chicago, Ill.) had three saves in the cage during the last half of the fourth quarter.

    With the win Pacific finished the season 17-11 (4-4 MPSF) to finish seventh that the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament, while the loss dropped Pepperdine to 9-18 (1-7 MPSF) on the year for the eight place finish.
