Pacific Field Hockey - Tigers Drop 4-3 Decision To UC Davis
The Pacific Field Hockey team fell to UC Davis 4-3 after a penalty strokes shootout in their final regular season home game on Saturday, October 30th. With the loss, the Tigers record stands at 2-14, 0-6 in the NorPac conference. UC Davis improved to 6-9, 2-4 in NorPac games.
"It was a hard fought game, I couldn't have asked any more from the team than what they put out there," said head coach Linda MacDonald.
The Tigers took an early 1-0 lead after a goal by senior Sarah Miceli (Los Gatos, Calif.) at nearly the nine minute mark of the first half.
Miceli found the net on rebound after a blocked shot off the stick of sophomore Emily Trudeau (San Jose, Calif.), to score her second goal of the season. The lead increased to 2-0 as senior Megan Pederson scored at 19:51 of the first half after an outstanding pass from sophomore Jenna Vivian (Gilroy, Calif.) and a deflection from senior Kelly Perkins (Gilroy, Calif.).
UC Davis scored in the 28th minute, with Casey Wollbrink scored on an assist from Kristen Lopez to cut the Tigers' lead to 2-1 at halftime.
The Aggies scored again on penalty stroke from Marissa Hughes, to tie the game at 2-2 at the 48:06 mark. Vivian scored for the Tigers at the
61:16 mark, after a rebound from a shot by Trudeau to give Pacific a
3-2 lead. UC Davis' Wollbrink evened it up at 3-3 just over a minute later and final seven and half minutes were played without a score and the teams headed to overtime.
Two 15 minute sudden victory overtime periods were played with neither team scoring, though the Aggies out-shot Pacific 15-8. The game then proceeded to penalty strokes, with each team sending out five players for a one-on-one confrontation with the opposing team's goalkeeper.
The Tigers missed their first two attempts on shots by junior Amanda Spellman (Gilroy, Calif.) and Pederson, while UC Davis scored on strokes from Lydia Brambila and Lindsey Valadez. Freshman Emily Tregoning (San Jose, Calif.) converted the Tigers' third attempt, as did Marissa Hughes for UC Davis. Freshman Maggie Grindatti (Saco,
Maine) was then blocked by Aggie goalkeeper Lauren Sawvelle to earn the victory.
The Tigers are next in action at the NorPac Tournament, beginning Nov.
4 at Davidson University.
