Pacific Jazz Ensemble to Host “STRAIGHT, NO CHASER" Fund-raiser for Music Students

    Oct 29, 2010

The Pacific Jazz Ensemble will hold a fundraiser to help this outstanding group travel to jazz festivals such as the Monterey Jazz Festival's "Next Generation Festival."

Throughout the history of jazz, traveling with an eighteen-piece big band has always been a difficult task financially. To tackle this challenge, the University of the Pacific Jazz Ensemble will present a fundraising event to draw both fans of jazz and new supporters interested in a fun night out to an evening of card games, food, spirits, and great jazz titled "Straight, No Chaser."

"Straight, No Chaser" will provide guests a steak dinner, scotch sampling, numerous card tables for playing poker/blackjack, and jazz performed by students, faculty, and special guest saxophonist Jeff Clayton of the Clayton Hamilton Orchestra (a famous Los Angeles-based big band). The event will take place in Stockton at Valley Brewing Company (157 W Adams Street) on Saturday, November 20, 2010, 6-9 PM. There will be raffle items and prizes for card game winners. Tickets are $35 per person and can be purchased at Valley Brewing Company or purchased online at web.pacific.edu/x38126.xml. All proceeds will benefit the University of the Pacific Jazz Ensemble program fund.

Patrick Langham is Associate Professor and Director of Jazz Studies at University of the Pacific Conservatory of Music.
