    Pacific MWP: Tigers Rebound With 13-7 Win Over No. 8 Long Beach State, Finish Seventh at SoCal

    Entering their final game of the Southern California Tournament, Pacific's men's water polo team defeated No. 8 Long Beach State 13-7 to finish in seventh place at the tournament. With the win the Tigers improved to 8-4 on the season.

    In the first quarter junior Tom Koning (Poway, Calif.) gave Pacific the 1-0 lead at the 6:04 spot but Long Beach countered at the 5:34 mark to tie the game at 1-1. Koning then found the back of the net for the second time in the quarter with 3:39 remaining on the clock to give the Tigers the one point advantage; however Long Beach countered 33 seconds later to tie the game at two all. With :47 left in the quarter Pacific took the 3-2 when Koning scored his third goal of the quarter.

    At the start of the second quarter the Tigers extended their lead to three on back-to-back goals from senior Joey Gullikson (Sonoma, Calif.) and sophomore Goran Tomasevic (Split, Croatia) at the 6:58 and 5:56 marks respectively. Pacific then went up 6-2 when sophomoreBalazs Szabo (Budapest, Hungary) found the back of the net on a five-meter penalty shot. With 4:25 remaining in the half the 49ers tallied their third goal of the contest to cut Pacific's lead to three. Junior Lance Morrison (Fairfield, Calif.) and freshman Balazs Erdelyi (Eger, Hungary) then scored uninterrupted goals at the 3:45 and 2:17 spots to give Pacific the 8-3 lead. Long Beach closed out the quarter tallying a goal with 1:05 left to play to reduce the Tiger lead to four.

    During the third quarter Pacific's defense stepped up to hold Long Beach's offense scoreless while the Tigers expanded their lead to eight. Tomasevic and Erdelyi kicked off the quarter tallying their second goals of the game at the 6:24 and 3:49 spots. SeniorAustin Delong (Houston, Texas) became the seventh Tiger to score in the contest, when he found the back of the net at the 2:28 point. With 1:13 left on the clock, Erdelyi notched his second goal of the quarter to make it a 12-4 game.

    In the final frame Long Beach scored two consecutive goals at the 6:59 and 3:18 marks to come within six of Pacific, but Morrison countered with his second goal of the game at the 3:01 point to give the Tigers the 13-6 lead. Long Beach concluded the game scoring their seventh goal with 1:32 remaining in regulation for a 13-7 final score.

    Pacific was led by junior Tom Koning (Poway, Calif.) and Balazs Erdelyi (Eger, Hungary) who scored three goals apiece. Freshman Alex Malkis (Yoqneam, Israel) recorded 10 saves in the cage, which included a blocked five-meter penalty shot.

    The Tigers return to action on Friday, October 8 against UC Davis at 6 p.m. in Davis, Calif.
