Pacific Women’s Soccer Rallies for 1-1 Draw at Oregon

    Sep 5, 2010

Angelica Figueroas equalizer in the 66th minute earned the Pacific womens soccer team a 1-1 draw with Oregon at the 2010 Nike Invitational at Pape' Field Sunday afternoon. Kristen Wavomba (Encinitas, Calif. / San Dieguito Academy), Alex Topp (San Diego, Calif. / Rancho Bernardo) and Kylee Ah Choy (Mililani, Hawai'i / Kamehameha) earned All-Tournament Team honors.

Pacifics record stands at 2-2-1 on the season, while Oregon holds a 2-1-2 mark.

We got better today, said head coach Keith Coleman. We fought hard to get back in it, and once we did, we got a boost of confidence and played better. You want to win, but we pulled a lot of positives from this draw.

For the match, Oregon out-shot Pacific 18-9, but the Tigers held the Ducks to a number of shots from long distance and generated more scoring chances. Oregon held a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal.

Redshirt senior goalkeeper Jill Medigovich (Sacramento, Calif. / Sheldon) posted five saves, including one in overtime.

Oregon got on the board in the 26nd minute, as Jen Stoltenberg put a move on a defender to split the defense. Stoltenberg came in one on one against the Medigovich and tucked the ball inside the post to the far side for her third goal of the season at the 25:41 mark.

Figueroa knotted the game at one in the 66th minute. Wavomba (Encinitas, Calif. / San Dieguito Academy) slotted a ball through to Figueora (Linden, Calif. / Linden), who beat Oregon goalkeeper Cody Miles to her right, with a slow rolling ball to the back-post.

That seemed like it took forever to roll into the back of the net, Coleman added. The goal energized us. Once we scored, the team started to believe in themselves. We played well, but they were a very good team. They are athletic at every position. Once we got that goal, it turned and we felt like we could win the game.

Each team posted two shots in the remainder of regulation as the match went to extra time.

In the first overtime, Oregon sent a pair of shots wide of the net, while a header from Renae McFaddon (Ripon, Calif. / Ripon) in the 99th minute was stopped by Miles. The Ducks out-shot the Tigers 2-1 in the second overtime session, but neither side had a shot on target.

The Ducks out-shot Pacific 4-2 in the first half, holding a 3-1 edge in shots on target. Laura Hogan opened the match with a shot on Miles in the fourth minute, but Miles was up to the task, making the save. Three minutes later, Medigovich stoned Rianna Mansfield on a chance and then denied Tahne Apo in the 16th minute before the Ducks finally broke through in the 26nd.

Pacific is back in action this weekend at the Stanford Nike Invitational, taking on No. 10 (Soccer Times)/No. 8 (NSCAA) Santa Clara, and No. 2 Stanford. The Tigers meet Santa Clara on Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.
