    Pacific Men's Water Polo: No. 10 Tigers Overpower No. 11 UC San Diego, Tigers Defeat Tritons 12-5

    In the second day of the Triton Invitational, Pacific's men's water polo team began the day with a 12-5 victory over No. 11 UC San Diego. With the win the Tigers improved to 3-0 on the season while the Tritons fell to 1-2 on the year.

    At the start of the first quarter UC San Diego jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead at the 7:04 point but Balazs Erdelyi (Eger, Hungary) countered at the 4:06 mark on a five meter penalty shot to tie the game at one goal apiece. The Tritons regained the one point advantage with 3:35 remaining in the quarter however Pacific countered with consecutive goals from three Tigers to take the two point lead. Junior Daniel Lungu (Netanya, Israel) found the back of the net at the 3:16 mark to tie the game at 2-2. Junior Tom Koning(Poway, Calif.) and sophomore Jason Wensley (Concord, Calif.) then tallied back-to-back goals at the :55 and :07 points to give Pacific the 4-2 lead at the end of the quarter.

    In the second frame sophomore Goran Tomasevic (Split, Croatia) notched his first goal of the contest with 7:14 remaining in the half to give the Tigers the three point advantage. At the 6:40 mark UC San Diego scored its lone goal of the quarter to make it a 5-3 game, but the Tigers responded at the 5:31, 3:28 and :15 points on goals from sophomore Balazs Szabo (Budapest, Hungary), senior Joey Gullikson (Sonoma, Calif.) and Erdelyi respectively to take the 8-3 lead going into the half.

    UC San Diego kicked off the third quarter tallying goals at the 6:04 and 3:09 spots to put the Tritons within three goals of the Tigers, but Erdelyi notched his second goal of the game with 2:21 remaining on the clock to give Pacific the 9-5 lead.

    In the final frame the Tigers sealed the win with additional goals from Koning, Tomasevic and junior Todd Hazen (Atherton, Calif.) at the 5:42, 2:09 and 1:28 marks respectively while the defense shutout the Tritons. Pacific's twelfth and final goal of the game at the 1:28 point was Hazen's first collegiate goal in the orange and black.

    "This is a good win for us because we lost to this team last year," said graduate assistant coach Jack Curley. "We also lost to Air Force last season and we look to continue our improvement against them in our afternoon game."

    Pacific was led by freshman Balazs Erdelyi (Eger, Hungary) who notched three goals in the contest while freshman Alex Malkis(Yoqneam, Israel) picked up eight saves in the cage for the Tigers.

    The Tigers conclude action at 2:15 p.m. against No. 19 Air Force.
