Brubeck Institute Winners – DownBeat Magazine’s 34th Annual Student Awards
The Brubeck Institute is very proud to announce that students in the Brubeck Fellowship Program have won five awards in the 34th Annual Student Music Awards competition. Awards are given in 15 categories in five divisions. Judging is by a panel of distinguished professional musicians and educators from across the country.
The Brubeck Institute winners for the 2011 competition are: Chad Lefkowitz-Brown, saxophone, Jazz Soloist Winner, Undergraduate College Outstanding Performance; Nick Frenay, trumpet, Jazz Soloist Winner, Undergraduate College Outstanding Performance; Chad Lefkowitz-Brown, Original Composition - "Deviation", Undergraduate College Winner; Nick Frenay, Jazz Arrangement for "All My Love" by Dave Brubeck, Undergraduate College Winner; and Fantasy V (the 2010 BIJQ), Undergraduate College Winner - Jazz Group. Joe Gilman is the musical director for the Fellowship Program.
The Brubeck Fellowship Program has only five students in any given year, and because it is a one- or two-year program, they are always freshmen or sophomores. The students in the program have now won a total of 12 DownBeat awards in the past five years, and the award for best undergraduate jazz group for the 4th time in five years. Congratulations to all!
