Tigers Fall 79-69 At USF

The Pacific men's basketball team dropped a 79-69 decision at USF on Saturday, Dec. 10. The Tigers dropped to 4-4 on the year, while the Dons improved to 8-3. Pacific has won all four home games, but have lost all four on the road.

Pacific held the Dons to just two points over the first five minutes of the first half, but led just 5-2. After USF took an 8-6 lead, the Tigers roared back with an 8-0 run led by a pair of three-pointers by sophomore Trevin Harristo lead 14-8 with 11:22 to play in the half. After a basket by USF's Perris Blackwell, the Tigers scored five more in a row to hold a 19-10 lead with 9:30 to go in the half. With Pacific leading 26-20, sophomore Andrew Bockscored four points in a 6-2 run as Pacific extended its lead to 32-22 with 3:20 left in the half. The Dons zoomed right back with an inadvertent banked-in three-pointer by Angelo Caloiaro capping a 10-0 run to even it up at 32-32 with just under a minute to play. Sophomore Ross Rivera hit a pair of free throws with :33 seconds left to give the Tigers a 34-32 halftime lead.

The teams played even for the first few minutes of the second half. The Tigers took a 40-36 lead after a layup by junior Colin Beatty with 17:12 remaining. USF then went on a 12-0 run to gain a 48-40 lead and take control of the game. Pacific cut it back to 50-46 with 11:16 to go after a four-point play by Harris. A 14-7 run by the Dons gave them a 64-53 lead with 6:30 to play and the Tigers would trail by as much as 14 in the second half. Behind 71-57 with 3:04 to play, Pacific cut it to 75-67 with :37 seconds to play but would get no closer.Rivera led a season-high five Tigers in double-figures with 15 points. Beatty had 12 points, while junior Travis Fulton, Harris and Bock each added 10 points.

The Dons shot 62.5 percent from the field in the second half, outscoring Pacific 30-18 in the paint for the game. The Tigers were out-rebounded 31-29. Pacific had eight turnovers, while the Dons turned it over just five times.

The Tigers are back in action with a game at Santa Clara on Saturday, Dec. 17. The early tip time is set for 2:00 p.m.
