Wakefield Named Player of the Week

    Dec 12, 2011

Pacific's Ashley Wakefield was named the Big West Women's Basketball Player of the Week Monday after turning in a pair of double-doubles over the weekend.

The guard from Santa Clarita, Calif., averaged 17.0 points per game and 11.5 rebounds per game on the week.

On Friday, she scored 10 points with 10 rebounds with three steals and the five assists as the Tigers knocked off SEC opponent Florida to win their fourth-straight game.  On the glass, she grabbed three offensive boards against the Gators as part of her 10 rebounds and also posted one blocked shot. Her three steals helped Pacific force 22 Florida turnovers.

Against San Diego on Sunday, Wakefield sprung for season-highs in points and rebounds, with a 24-point, 13-rebound effort.  She shot 10-of-17 (58 percent) from the field, driving to the basket for a lay-up while being fouled five times.

She pulled in four of her 13 rebounds on the offensive glass, added an assist, a steal and a blocked shot. Her defense against USD's Dominique Connors held the Torero's leading scorer - who had scored 22 points in the Torereo's win over San Diego State on Thursday - to a mere six points.

For the season, Wakefield is second on the team and eighth in the Big West in scoring with 12.6 points per game, while she ranks fifth in the BWC in rebounds per game (8.1) and field goal percentage (.521). In both categories, she's the leader in the conference among guards. Her 2.1 steals per game rank fourth in the conference.

It is the second-straight Player of the Week Award for a Tiger, as junior guard Erica McKenzie picked up the honor last Monday. McKenzie made a sizeable effort to keep the award, with 19 points per game, including 23 in the Tigers' win over Florida and 16 at San Diego.
