Pacific Baseball Drops Contest to Kansas State in Conway

    Feb 26, 2011

In the fourth meeting between Kansas State and Pacific, the Wildcats emerged with a 6-2 win at the Baseball at the Beach tournament as Jason King's three-run home run provided the offense for Kansas State. Six Tigers each picked up a base hit for Pacific with senior Matt Carvutto (Poway, Calif.) picking up an RBI on a 1-for-2 day.

Pacific picked up a run in the first as Brett Christopher (Livermore, Calif.) walked to lead off the bottom of the inning, and after Dustin Torchio (Santa Cruz, Calif.) sacrificed him to second base, Carvutto singled passed third for the two-out RBI.

Kansas State responded with a pair of runs in the second without a hit, as Tigers starter LHP Paul Moeller (Folsom, Calif.) hit his first two batters of the inning. After a sacrifice moved the runners, Ross Kivett delivered an RBI ground-out to tie the game, and a wild pitch enabled Matt Giller to trot home with the go-ahead run.

In the sixth, Moeller walked Tanner Witt to lead off the inning, and then Ryan Moore was awarded first base after it was ruled the pitch hit him on his bunt attempt. After a fly out advanced the lead runner, Jason King delivered a three-run home run to left field for a 5-1 Kansas State lead.

Moeller departed with 5.1 innings pitched and five earned runs on just three hits, but he hit a trio of Wildcats and walked three to derail his bid for a 'quality start.' Redshirt freshman LHP Andrew Wild (Visalia, Calif.) came in and retired the threat, but then in the top of the seventh, Kansas State got two on with one out on a single and a walk and tacked on a run via an RBI single from Mike Kindel.

Pacific picked up a run in the bottom of the ninth as senior 1B Brian Martin (Livermore, Calif.) doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a fly out from Carvutto. Junior Daniel Johnston (Portola Valley, Calif.) reached on an error as his dribbler up the first base line couldn't be handled by Kansas State LHP Blake Freeman, allowing Martin to score. Freshman Peter Miller (Santa Cruz, Calif.) reached on a miscue on a grounder up the middle. But Freeman coaxed a groundout to end the ball game and hand Pacific its fifth loss to open the season.

Justin Lindsey earned the win for Kansas State in his first start of the season. The right-hander allowed two hits, one run and struck out one in four innings of work.

Junior RHP Jared Wagner (Danville, Calif.) tossed 1.2 innings of shutout ball out of the Pacific bullpen with two strikeouts while senior RHP Robbie Richardson (Lodi, Calif.) finished the game with a scoreless ninth, fanning one.

The Tigers will look to salvage the final game of the Baseball at the Beach tournament in a 8 a.m. PT start, 11 a.m. ET, against Western Kentucky.
