Pacific Falls To NC State In Baseball at the Beach Opener
The Pacific Tigers dropped a 13-4 decision against North Carolina State Friday afternoon at Charles Watson Stadium in Conway to open the Baseball at the Beach tournament. The Wolfpack scored in six of eight innings to hand the Tigers the loss. Senior DH Matt Carvutto and Brian Martin each turned in three-for-five days at the plate for Pacific.
Pacific scored four runs off NC State starter Josh Easley, but were shutout over the final four innings by three pitchers out of the Wolfpack bullpen.
Junior OF Allen Riley (Fresno, Calif.) led off the top of the second inning with a double down the right-field line, and after a one-out sacrifice by junior INF Garrett Borba (Merced, Calif.), freshman C Jason Taasaas (Elk Grove, Calif.) delivered a double to left center for a 1-0 Tigers lead. But NC State rallied with two in the bottom of the second, setting the table with a pair of walks and a sacrifice bunt. Wolfpack CF Brett Williams singled up the middle to plate two runs and give NC State its' first lead. Pointer escaped further damage as he coaxed a double-play out of Chris Diaz to end the inning.
Pacific responded in the top of the third with back-to-back one-out singles from Martin (Livermore, Calif.) and Carvutto (Poway, Calif). Riley ripped a double to right field to plate Martin and junior DH Daniel Johnston (Portola Valley, Calif.) gave the Tigers a 3-2 lead with an RBI groundout.
But NC State would knot the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the third, on an RBI fielder's choice from Andrew Ciencin.
In the Wolfpack fourth, back-to-back singles opened the inning before a sacrifice set up second and third for Diaz, who tripled into the left-field corner for a 5-3 NC State lead. Matt Bergquist then laid down the squeeze bunt to stretch the lead to 6-3 before Pointer retired the final batter of the inning.
Pacific cut the margin to 6-4 in the top of the fifth as Carvutto led off with a double to left center to chase Easley. Johnston then added a one-out double off LHP Vance Williams to plate Carvutto, but a ground-out and a fly-out ended the threat with Pacific down a pair.
NC State blew the game open in their half of the fifth as Pacific starter Marcus Pointer (Pacifica, Calif.) gave up three singles while retiring two in between, the last an RBI single from Chris Schaffer to chase the senior righty. But Brett Williams greeted junior RHP Chris Larsen (Moline, Ill.) with a three-run home run to left for a 10-4 NC State lead.
The Wolfpack tacked on two in the seventh on a two-run single from Diaz off freshman LHP Erik Lockwood (Broomfield, Colo.) and one in the eighth on a pinch-hit single from Harold Riggins off sophomore RHP Jonas Noack (San Diego, Calif.).
The NC State bullpen shut the door on Pacific, allowing no runs in five innings of work, as Williams inherited runners were charge to Easley in the fifth. The Wolfpack 'pen struck out seven Tigers while walking one. Rob Chamra picked up the win with three innings, six strikeouts and three hits allowed in relief.
Freshman INF/RHP Peter Miller (Santa Cruz, Calif.) recorded the final two outs of the eighth, striking out one of his two batters faced.
Pacific falls to 0-4 overall and will look for their first win against Kansas State on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. ET, 10:30 a.m. PT. at Charles Watson Stadium in Conway, S.C.
