Swimming: Pacific Finishes Inaugural MPSF Swimming & Diving Championships With A Second Place Finish
With the inaugural Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Swimming & Diving Championships coming to an end, Pacific's men's swim team finished the four day meet in second place behind Cal State Bakersfield with 499 point. While the women's swim team had a total of 232 through four days of action for the seventh place finish.
Junior Jayme Swalin kicked off the fourth day of the MPSF Swimming & Diving Championships with a third place finish in the 1650 Free, when she completed the race in 17:01.90. Also registering a top-20 finish in the event for Pacific was freshman Katie McBride, who touched the wall in 17:38.32 to take the No. 17 spot. The men's team had five swimmers finish in the 1650 Free top-5 finals. Zachary Zlotoff led the way with a second place finish (16:03.97) while Sean Dunnigan, Bart Platow and DJ Schilling took the three thru five spots.
In the 200 Back finals, freshman Shelby Bolin had a pace of 2:04.97 to finish in seventh for the women. While freshman Oliver Simkovic took the top spot in the men's 200 Back finals when he touched the wall in 1:46.51. The men's swim team also registered a pair of back-to- back finishes in the 100 Free and 200 Breast finals. During the 100 Free finals, Kevin Schirmer and Steven Woods finished in fourth (45.31) and fifth (45.51) respectively. WhileNathan LeRoy and Roger Ward had times of 2:03.14 and 2:04.93 respectively in the 200 Breast to claim the No. 2 and No. 3 places.
During the 200 Fly, Pacific's top finish in the women's side came from Jenna Chaplin while RJ Barton had the men's top finish. Chaplin touched the wall in 2:05.24 to come in tenth on the women's side, narrowly missing the finals. Barton finished sixth during the finals heat with a time of 1:53.31.
In the last relay event of the championships, the women's 400 Free Relay team "A" comprised of MaryElla Randall, Hayley Shillington, Bo Cameron and Swalin came in seventh place when the group had a pace of 3:29.67. The men's 400 Free Relay team "A" made up of Adam Sharp, Taylor Moore, Woods and Schirmer closed out the four day championships with a second place finish when the quartet collectively had a time of 3:01.39.
Freshman Oliver Simkovic's time in the 200 Back (1:46.51) and the men's 400 Free Relay team's time (3:01.39) beat the NCAA B-Cut times for their respective races. Simkovic also set an NCAA B-cut qualifying time in the 400 IM finals on Friday, February 25. On the women's side freshman MaryElla Randall set an NCAA B-cut qualifying time in the 500 Free on Thursday, February 24.
