    Pacific Women's Waterpolo: No. Pacific Defeats Cal State East Bay In Home Opener, 7-6

    Taking part in the fourth annual Pacific Plays Pink events, Pacific's women's water polo team defeated Cal State East Bay (CSUEB), 7-6, in the 2011 home opener. With the win the Tigers improved to 2-3 on the year while the Pioneers fell to 1-2 on the season.

    The Tigers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead behind a goal from senior Bethany Quertermous(Humble, Texas) at the 7:03 mark. Despite taking the early lead Pacific gave up three unanswered goals in the last five minutes of the quarter to trail the Pioneers 3-1.

    Pacific began the second frame when senior Allison King (Benicia, Calif.) won the sprint for the Tigers. Senior Dara Tawarahara (Honolulu, Hawaii) notched the Tigers first goal of the quarter when she tallied her first goal of the contest at the 7:23 spot to put Pacific within one of CSUEB. Tawarahara then tied the game at three all when she converted a five-meter penalty shot and was followed up by the go ahead goal from junior Jessica Loper (Napa, Calif.) to end the half.

    With the 4-3 lead at the start of the third quarter, Pacific took the two point advantage at the 5:43 when Tawarahara completed the hat trick. The Pioneers found the back of the net 27 second later to come within one of Pacific, however the Tigers countered on a goal from senior Mandy King (Benicia, Calif.) with :05 remaining on the clock to make it a 6-4 contest.

    In the final frame CSUEB notched a goal at the 6:02 spot to cut Pacific's lead to one, but the Tigers regained the two point lead on Mandy King's second goal of the day. The Pioneers closed out the contest with a goal in the final seconds of regulation for a 7-6 final score.


    The Tigers were led by senior Dara Tawarahara (Honolulu, Hawaii) who tallied three goals for Pacific, while freshman Michele Relton recorded seven saves in the cage.

    Pacific returns to action on Saturday, February 12 at the Princeton Invitational in Princeton, N.J. The Tigers will face Brown at 8:30 am PT in their first matchup of the contest
