Women's Water Polo: No. 20 Pacific Comes Up Short, Falls to No. 10 San Jose State, 8-7

Mar 13, 2011

Facing the No. 10 team in the nation, Pacific's women's water polo team narrowly lost to San Jose State (SJSU), 8-7, at the Aztec Invitational on Sunday, March 13. With the loss the Tigers fell to 11-8 on the season.

In the contest Pacific gave up a trio of goals to the Spartans, but stayed within striking distance after scoring a pair of goals for a 3-2 score at the end of the first. However in the second frame Pacific was shutout 4-0 as the Spartans expanded their lead by five. Although the Tigers trailed 7-2 at the start of the half, the Tiger defense limited SJSU to one goal in the two final frames behind eight blocks from freshman Michele Relton (Beaconsfield, QC, Canada). Pacific tallied five goals in the last 16 minutes of regulation, but the scoring attack was not enough as the Tigers could not score the one additional goal to send the game into overtime, resulting in an 8-7 final score.

Pacific was led by Elise Martin (Calgary, AB, Canada) who completed the hat trick, whileMalena Prlain (Portland, Ore.), Allie King (Benicia, Calif.), Bethany Quertermous (Humble Texas) and Dara Tawarahara (Honolulu, Hawaii) scored one goal apiece. Freshman Michele Relton (Beaconsfield, QC, Canada) recorded 15 blocks in the cage.

The Tigers conclude action at the Aztec Invitational against Cal State Bakersfield at 1:45 pm.
