Duran Nets 23 As Pacific Downs Cal State Dominguez Hills, 74-68Win moves Pacific Men's Basketball Team to 2-1 on the year
Returning home to the Alex G. Spanos Center after hitting the road for the first time in 2011, the Pacific men's basketball team took down Cal State Dominguez Hills, 74-68, on Monday, November 21. The win moved the Tigers to 2-1 on the year while the Toros fell to 0-2 on the year.
After an opening three-pointer from junior Markus Duran, the Toros scored 10 straight to lead 10-3 with three minutes gone by in the first half. Pacific then outscored the Toros 8-4, with sophomore Ross Rivera scoring six points in the run to make it 15-11 with 13:30 to go. Cal State Dominguez Hills pushed the lead back to 20-11, as the Tigers missed eight straight pointers. Sophomore Markcus Falley broke the stretch with a pair of three-pointers as part of an 11-2 run to knot it up at 22-22 with 8:53 left. A 6-1 spurt gave the Toros a 28-23 advantage with 6:19 to play and the Tigers were playing catch up the rest of the half to trail 42-38 at the break.
Pacific scored the first five points of the second half to take their first lead (43-42) since the early going. The Toros came back with three-pointer from Robert Wilhite to regain the lead. Duran scored the next five points for the Tigers as the teams traded the lead four times in the next four minutes. A three-pointer from sophomore Trevin Harris gave the Tigers a 55-51 lead with 11:47 to play in the game. A quick 8-0 run by the Toros a 59-55 advantage just two minutes later, but the Tigers responded after Falley was fouled shooting a three-pointer and made all three free throws making it 59-58. After five straight points put CSUDH back up 64-58, the Tigers held the Toros scoreless over the next four minutes. In the 8-0 run, junior Colin Beatty scored four points to give Pacific a 66-64 lead with 3:44 to play. The Toros evened it on their next possession, but the Tigers scored six straight on a layup from junior Travis Fulton and a pair of free throws each from sophomore Khalil Kelley and Duran to take a 72-66 lead with :26 seconds remaining. Cornell Jenkins scored a layup for CSUDH with :05 seconds remaining and sophomore Andrew Bock added a pair of free throws to seal the victory.
Duran led the Tigers with 23 points in the contest. Bock added 12 points on 9-of-10 shooting from the line. Pacific shot just 38.5% from the field, but used 13 offensive rebounds to score seven second chance points. The Tigers also scored 13 points off of turnovers, getting eight steals in the game.
Jenkins scored 18 points to lead the Toros.The Tigers are next in action at Hawaii on Friday, Nov. 25. The tipoff is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. (PST).
