Haircuts for Health
Pharmacy students from the University of the Pacific will be providing free blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes testing, as well as free flu shots to patients at three African American-owned barber shops within the Stockton community on Saturday, Nov. 19 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event will be the first event of its kind to be hosted by Pacific pharmacy students, and is special for several reasons. First, we are specifically reaching out to the African American population, a group that suffers significant health disparities. Instead of asking patients to come to us at one central location, we are going throughout the community in locations that patients are already comfortable and familiar with.
Barbershops represent a cultural institution that attracts large numbers of African American men and provide a familiar environment, making them a great location for providing health education and screening services. In addition, we have collaborated with local African American physician, Dr. Kwabena Adubofour, who has graciously agreed to provide follow-up health care services to patients found to be at risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes.
