Pacific SHPE Chapter Receives National Award

Nov 1, 2011

The student chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) at University of the Pacific received national award of "Most Improved Chapter of the Year" at SHPE National Conference 2011. The conference took place in Anaheim, CA, from October 26-30, 2011. Pacific's chapter was also recognized with "Outstanding Student Chapter" of its region.

Over 5,000 SHPE members attended the conference, with attendants from as far as Puerto Rico and from Junior High School Chapters to Professional Chapters. Pacific students Alejandra Aguilar, Adrian Escoto, Michael Ledesma, and Diana Valenzuela Medina were chapter representatives and participated in events from a nano-technology workshop to networking activities and more. The positive impression on potential employees even led to an interview with Intel for one of the students.

SHPE promotes students in the S.T.E.M fields; science, technology, engineering and math, to learn and apply professionalism skills in both the school and career environment. On campus, SHPE is one of the School's active engineering societies. In the past they have participated in outreach to younger students, provided bilingual college planning workshops, and been supported other engineering activities on campus. The chapter continues to grow in both number and scholarship.
