"Two Spirits" Film Showing on Thursday

Nov 9, 2011

This award-winning documentary is based on the true story of Fred Martinez, a transgender Navajo youth who was savagely murdered. The film not only follows Fred's life, but also gives a comprehensive history of the Two Spirit person in traditional Native American tribes before European settlers imposed Western views of sexuality and sin. In older times the Two Spirit (transgender) person was honored andrevered within the tribe.  They were often given places of rank and privilege, sometimes becoming the tribal medicine man, and often a spiritual prophet. Today, they are often faced with homophobia and even deadly hate crimes. This film is being screened in conjunction with Native American Heritage Month.
