Pacific's Alex Topp Named Big West Player of the Week
Pacific senior midfield Alex Topp was named Big West Offensive Player of the Week in women's soccer after her two-goal performance over the weekend, including the game-winning overtime goal against No. 18 UC Irvine.
Topp, from San Diego, Calif., gave the Tigers a 3-2 win over the Anteaters, ranked No. 18 in the Soccer Times Top 25, on Sunday as she turned and fired a shot from the corner of the box into the lower left corner with 4:49 left in the first overtime period.
On Friday, Topp headed in a restart from midfield, redirecting the long ball from sophomore defender Brittni Beeman, past Cal State Northridge goalkeeper Cynthia Jacobo, who earned Big West Defensive Player of the Week honors on Monday. The Tigers and Matadors played a scoreless two overtimes to draw, 1-1.
The two goals increased Topp's season total to five and giving her 11 goals in her career. Her header goal against Northridge made her the 13th Tiger to score double-digit goals in her Pacific career.Pacific, at 1-0-1, sit second in the Big West standings, but with the head-to-head win over UC Irvine and the preseason Big West favorite behind them on the schedule, the Tigers are in the driver's seat for a Big West tournament berth and potential semifinal home game or regular season title.
Overall, the Tigers are 7-4-1 on the season, including 5-0-1 at home. The Tigers will visit UC Riverside on Sunday, Oct. 9, for a Big West contest with the Highlanders (0-0-0 BWC).
