Grad Composed Straw Dogs SoundtrackGroupe has won several awards for his compositions
It's well known that University of the Pacific has influenced the look of many Hollywood blockbusters. Pacific's East-coast-like campus can be seen in several dozen movies, including two of the four films in the Indiana Jones series and the Bing Crosby classic "High Time."
This weekend, though, things have changed. Pacific's influence will be "heard" in the cinema.
"Straw Dogs," Sony Picture's remake of the 1971 classic movie about a husband and wife who move to a new town and face increasing hostility and harassment, will feature a soundtrack written by San Diego resident Larry Groupé, a 1979 graduate of Pacific's Conservatory of Music. The movie opened in theaters today. Directed by Rod Lurie, the film stars James Marsden, Kate Bosworth, James Wood and Alexander Skarsgård.
Film soundtracks are not new to Groupé. He has two Emmys to his name for the documentary scores for "Jonas Salk: Personally Speaking," and "Residue." He also was nominated for an Emmy for the score to "Mind of a Married Man." Other films featuring his music include "Nothing but the Truth" starring Kate Beckinsale, Matt Dillon and Alan Alda, "Resurrecting the Champ" starring Samuel L. Jackson, and "The Contender" starring Joan Allen, Gary Oldman and Jeff Bridges.
His success is not a surprise to his former professors. During his senior year at Pacific, Groupé was the recipient of the ASCAP award for student composers. He went on to earn his Masters of Music in Composition at the University of California at San Diego where he studied with Roger Reynolds, Toru Takemitsu and Pauline Oliveros.
He also has composed, conducted and produced more than 80 CD recordings, and his music has been performed by a number of symphony orchestras.
An interview with Groupé was recently published by Film Music Magazine and can be found online at http://www.filmmusicmag.com/?p=8526.
The soundtrack to "Straw Dogs" can be purchased on CD at local music retailers or electronically from iTunes.
