Pacific Baseball Falls To UCSB On Gaucho's Six-Run Fourth
The Pacific baseball team totaled nine hits, including three by freshman CF Tyler Sullivan, but UC Santa Barbara's hits came in bunches, as the Gauchos won game two, 9-2. UCSB tallied six runs in the fourth inning, and got seven innings from starter Austin Pettibone.
Senior SS Josh Simms and redshirt freshman 1B Erik Lockwood each posted two-for-four games, with Lockwood picking up an RBI.
Pettibone and the Gauchos received defensive aid in the form of three double plays turned against the Tigers.
After three shutout innings from Pettibone and Pacific LHP Kyle Crawford, the scoreboard lit up in the fourth inning. Crawford allowed a single to DH Greg Mahle before getting a foul pop for the first out, but six straight Gauchos reached after that. SS Steven Moon walked, and 1B Marc Venning doubled in the game's first run. After a walk to C Campbell Wear, Crawford hit CF Brett Vertigan with a pitch and surrendered a two-run double to LF Lance Roenicke. 2B Brandon Trinkwon doubled to right for two more runs, before RHP Bryce Lombardirecorded a strikeout and coaxed a groundout to end the inning.
Pettibone was touched for both Tiger runs in the fourth. Simms doubled to right field, and after sophomore 2BCurtis Gomez singled to right, Pettibone appeared to have Gomez picked off. But as Gomez stopped to get caught in a run down, the throw to second trickled away and defensive interference was called as Pacific got on the scoreboard. Lockwood delivered a single to left to plate freshman PR/2B Robby Mansfield, and sophomore C Jason Taasaas singled to left center. But Pettibone came back with a strike out and a fly out to end the inning.
Pacific challenged in the fifth Sullivan and Simms posting singles, but a line drive off the bat of junior 3BDustin Torchio was nabbed by Trinkwon at second to end the inning. Lockwood singled in the sixth, but was erased on a double-play.
Senior RHP Chris Larsen tossed a pair of shutout innings for Pacific, but in the seventh, UCSB plated two more runs. LHP Paul Moeller recorded the first two outs, but departed after hitting Mahle with a pitch. After a single by 3B Ryan Palermo and a walk to Moon, Venning delivered a two-run single off of senior RHP Thomas Berolzheimer.
Mansfield reached in the eighth, but Gauchos' RHP Jared Wilson got out of the inning with a 4-6-3 double-play ball.
In the eighth, the Gauchos tacked on their final run as Trinkwon walked and RF Joey Wallace tripled to left center.
Senior RHP Jared Wagner tossed a scoreless ninth, and the Tigers put two on in the ninth via a walk and an error, but Wilson recorded the final out on a grounder to end the ball game.
Pettibone allowed all nine Pacific hits in seven innings, with one earned run allowed. He struck out three while improving to 6-2 on the season. Crawford (2-5) took the loss, lasting 3.1 innings with six earned allowed on five hits and three walks.
Pacific falls to 11-26 overall, 1-7 in the Big West. UCSB improves to 20-17 on the year, 6-5 in conference.
Game three of the series is slate for a 1 p.m. first pitch at Klein Family Field.
