Pacific Baseball Opens Three-Game Series vs San Jose State Thursday
The Pacific baseball team opens a three-game split-site series against San Jose State Thursday at 6 p.m. against San Jose State at Klein Family Field. The first two gams of the series will be at the Tigers' home ballpark before Saturday's finale at Municipal Stadium in San Jose.
The Tigers are coming off a dramatic 6-5 win over Nevada Monday, in which sophomore C Jason Taasaascapped a four-run comeback with a walk-off single in the ninth. Pacific trailed 5-2 but tallied four unanswered runs. Trailing 5-4 in the ninth, junior 3B Dustin Torchio and redshirt freshman 1B Erik Lockwood posted back-to-back singles with one out before junior DH Tyger Pederson was hit by pitch to load the bases. Taasaas shot a hard bouncer past the diving first baseman to bring home the tying and winning runs as the Tigers walked off with a 6-5 win.
Pacific (9-19) has won six of 10 as the Tigers have hit .323 in the last 12 games. In the last 12, Tiger pitchers own a 4.12 ERA.
In game one, at 6 p.m, Pacific will start freshman RHP Michael Benson. The 6-4 righty is 2-3 on the year with a 3.44 ERA. In 36.2 innings, he's struck out 24 batters against 10 walks. He's gone deep into his last two outings, with a complete game shutout win over Brown and a 7.1 inning no-decision against UC Irvine. He's set and tied his career best in strikeouts with six in each of his last two appearances. In his last three appearances, he's fanned 17 batters against just two walks for a 2.49 ERA and a 1-1 record.
San Jose State (12-13) will send sophomore LHP Johnny Melero to the hill in game one, Melero is 1-4 with a 3.27 ERA in 33 innings. He's struck out 25 against nine walks and is coming off a six-inning no decision against Seattle on March 24.
In game two, under the lights at Klein Family Field at 6 p.m. Friday, Pacific sophomore LHP Kyle Crawford will be opposed by SJSU righty Esteban Guzman. Crawford is 2-2 with a 4.95 ERA. In 43.2 innings, the senior has tallied 24 strikeouts against 11 walks. He took a no decision against UC Irvine last Saturday, carrying a 4-1 lead into the eighth.
Guzman has started two games with six appearances in 2012. He has no record and a 2.08 ERA in 17.1 innings. He's fanned 18 batters against eight walks on the year. His last appearance was a one-inning relief stint against San Francisco on Tuesday in which he allowed one earned run on two hits with a strikeout.
Saturday, the action moves to Municipal Stadium in San Jose for a 1 p.m. series finale. Tiger freshman RHPMichael Hager gets the ball for the start. He is 1-2 on the season with a 6.09 ERA and 14 strikeouts. In 34 innings of work, he's allowed five walks. On Sunday, Hager gave up six earned in six innings in a loss to UC Irvine.
