Tigers Edged By No. 15 UC Santa Barbara

Apr 15, 2012

After yesterday's thrilling overtime win, the Pacific women's water polo team was unable to replicate its performance, falling to No. 15 UC Santa Barbara, 8-7, Sunday, April 15, in a Big West Conference match at the Chris Kjeldsen Aquatics Complex.

Senior Kim Kay had an impressive outing, pacing the Tigers with four goals, three of which came in the third quarter. Freshman Brydie Pye continued her stellar play of late, notching a hat trick for the second straight game.

Sophomore goalkeeper Michele Relton blocked eight shots in four quarters of work.

UC Santa Barbara (19-13, 3-2 Big West) opened the match with two quick goals. Pacific (10-16, 2-3 BWC) broke through on Pye's first goal of the match at the 5:49 mark, and neither team would score the rest of the way in the first frame.

The Gauchos extended their lead back to two, 3-1, with a goal at the 4:39 mark before Pye answered with her second goal one minute later. UCSB would end the half with two more goals, however, taking a 5-2 lead into halftime.

Down by three and struggling to score, Kay put the Tigers on her back during the third quarter, scoring all three of Pacific's goals. She pulled the Tigers back to within two, 5-3, at the 5:31 mark, but the visitors put away back-to-back goals to go up 7-3 with 4:01 left in the period. Kay scored the final two goals of the quarter, pulling Pacific to within two, 7-5, with one quarter left to play.

Pye scored one minute into the fourth quarter to cut UCSB's lead to one, 7-6. The two squads played even for the next two minutes before the Gauchos scored with four minutes left, going up by two. UCSB's defense held strong down the stretch, as it kept the Tigers off the scoreboard until 28 seconds left when Kay notched her fourth and final goal.

UC Santa Barbara was led by Bryce Winton's hat trick. Goalkeeper Ruth Milne tallied 11 saves.

Pacific concludes its regular season next Saturday, April 21, when it hosts Santa Clara in a noon match. The Tigers' three seniors will be honored prior to the start of the game.
