Mardones, Simkovic Earn MPSF Weekly Honors
Pacific Swimming saw two of its student-athletes earn Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Athlete of the Week honors this week as freshman Cristina Mardones and junior Oliver Simkovic collected the conference's weekly award, the league office announced Wednesday, Dec. 19.
The Tigers are fresh off a stellar showing at the UNLV Winter Invitational last weekend in Las Vegas, Nev. Pacific's men's team won the three-day meet while the women's squad finished second.
Mardones collected two event titles at the UNLV Winter Invitational, winning the 200 IM (2:04.33) and the 400 IM (4:25.98). She added a second-place finish in the 200 Breast (2:17.75) and a fourth-place finish in the 100 Breast (1:04.78). She was also on the winning 800 Free Relay team and the third-place 400 Free Relay, 200 Medley Relay and 400 Medley Relay teams.
Simkovic's spectacular weekend was highlighted by an event title in the 200 Back (1:48.82). He also recorded second-place times in the 200 IM (1:49.73) and the 400 IM (3:59.93). Simkovic is the first MPSF male swimmer to earn a second weekly award this season after being honored back in October.
Pacific will continue to train in Las Vegas for the next two days in preparation for the remainder of the season and the MPSF Championships in February. The Tigers are back in action in early January when they face Stanford in a road dual meet.
