Tigers Fall At Saint Mary's
The Tiger men's basketball team dropped a 74-46 decision at Saint Mary's on Wednesday, Dec. 19 at McKeon Pavilion. The Tigers fell to 5-6, while Saint Mary's improved to 8-2.
Pacific opened up a 4-0 lead in the early going, but the Gaels responded with an 8-0 run, holding the Tigers scoreless for over six minutes. Pacific fell behind 15-5 and was without a field goal for more than 10 minutes. Junior Sama Taku ended the drought with a jumper at the 8:10 mark to make it 15-7. The Gaels extended to a 36-17 halftime lead, after they finished the first half by outscoring Pacific 21-10. The Tigers hit just seven of 25 shots from the field in the first half (28.0%).
The Gaels built the lead to 21 (46-25) with 14:33 to play in the game. The Tigers scored seven straight on three points from junior Ross Rivera, a pair of free throws by senior Lorenzo McCloud and a fast break dunk by junior Khalil Kelley to cut it to 14 (46-32) with 13:06 left. Back to back three-pointers by Matthew Dellavedova capped a 10-0 run run to give Saint Mary's its largest lead at 56-32 with 10:17 to play in the game. The Gael lead did not fall below 20 the rest of the way.
Kelley led the Tigers with 11 points. McCloud added 10 points, all from the free throw line. Pacific shot just 32.6% from the field, including 7-25 (28.0%) in the first half. Saint Mary's outrebounded the Tigers 44-24, including 17 offensive boards that lead to a 16-2 advantage in second chance points.
Pacific is next in action with a home game against Cal Maritime on Friday, Dec. 21 at 7:30 p.m.
