Pacific Men's Tennis: Castro Named Big West Men's Tennis Player Of The Week

Feb 15, 2012

Leading the Tigers' at the top of the order, senior Ivan Castro earned Pacific's Big West Player of the Week award for the week ending on February 12.  The Tigers' No. 1 singles player finished his week with a 2-0 record against Pacific's top opponents while also sporting a perfect 2-0 mark in doubles play with his partner, junior Alex Golding.  As a team, the Tigers dropped a 4-3 decision to Loyola Marymount (LMU) on Saturday before rebounding with a dominating 6-1 win over Saint Mary's on Sunday afternoon.  The award was the first of the season for the Tigers and the second career weekly award for Castro.

Against LMU, Castro put together one of his most dominant outings of the year, dropping just four games total over his two matches to give the Tigers a chance against the Lions.  Alongside Golding, Castro took home an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles to pick up Pacific's only win in doubles action for the day.  Heading to singles play, Castro put the Tigers on the board early with a demonstrative, 6-1, 6-1, win over the Loin's No. 1 player, Alex Wilton.

A day later, Castro repeated his undefeated performance with an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles before picking up yet another win at No. 1 singles.  Against the Gael's No. 1 player, Maxime Olivan, Castro battled for a 6-3, 7-5, victory that helped seal the overall win for the Tigers.

For the year, Castro is 4-2 in both singles and doubles action including winning each of his last four matches at No. 1.

Castro and the Tigers will be back on the court Saturday, February 25, when they take on Arkansas at Santa Clara.  The match is scheduled to begin at 12:00 pm.
