Men's Swimming Prepares For MPSF Championships
It all comes down to this. After a season of hard training and intense competition, the Tigers are ready to lay it all on the line.
The Pacific men's swimming team will journey to Los Angeles for the 2012 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships beginning Wednesday, Feb. 15, and ending Saturday, Feb. 18. Held this year at East Los Angeles Community College, the meet will be the Tigers' last chance to earn NCAA qualification times.
Freshman Brandon Chandler leads four Tigers in the 500 Free, owning a season-best mark of 4:37.33. He took second against reigning conference champion CSU Bakersfield on Oct. 29 and added a fourth-place finish against UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 27. Fellow freshman Brandon Presswood (4:39.36) had his best showing against UCSB, coming in third while junior Zachary Zlotoff (4:42.74) took first against the Gauchos and added three third-place finishes.
Pacific will swim seven in the 200 IM, paced by sophomore Oliver Simkovic's season-best time of 1:51.45. He came in first at the Quad Meet on Nov. 5 and second at the Tri Meet on Jan. 21. Junior RJ Barton (1:53.85) swam his season-best time at the Arena Invitational on Nov. 17, while senior Roger Ward (1:54.23) finished in the top spot against CSU Bakersfield on Oct. 29.
The 50 Free will see nine Tigers compete as freshman Casey Fleming's time of 21.24 is tops on the squad. His best showing was a runner-up finish at the Quad Meet on Nov. 4. Classmate Cooper Rogers (21.35) and sophomore Taylor Moore (21.38) round out the top three team times. In his first year with the team, sophomore Balazs Erdelyi (21.44) took second twice, including his first-ever swim at the Pacific Invite on Oct. 14.
Simkovic leads a trio of Tigers in the 400 IM, owning a season-best time of 3:58.11. He won the event at the Quad Meet on Nov. 4, and took second in two more meets. Ward (4:05.95) had his top finish of the year against UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 27, coming in third.
The Tigers will enter four in the 100 Fly, paced by sophomore Dai Wilson's time of 50.31. Swimming the 100 Fly in every meet this season, Wilson took first against UCSB on Jan. 27 while adding a pair of second- and third-place finishes. Senior Kevin Byers (51.17) took first at the Quad Meet on Nov. 5 while Barton (51.52) had his best finish versus UCSB on Jan. 27, coming in fourth.
The 200 Free will see eight Pacific swimmers compete, led by Rogers' season-best time of 1:43.76. The freshman took third at the Pacific Invite on Oct. 14. Chandler (1:44.59) and Moore (1:44.96) round out the top three while sophomore Adam Sharp (1:45.05) had his best showing at the Tri Meet on Jan. 21, finishing fourth.
Senior Nathan LeRoy leads a group of four Tigers in the 100 Breast behind a season-best mark of 57.63. He opened the season with a runner-up finish at the Pacific Invite on Oct. 14 before adding a third-place finish and three fourth-place finishes to his resume. Ward (58.33) also had an impressive season, claiming first against both CSU Bakersfield on Oct. 29 and UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 27.
Pacific will see three swimmers compete in the 100 Back, led by Rogers' mark of 50.04. He won the event four times this season, including a run of three straight meets in the fall. Fleming (51.17) had his best performance at the Quad Meet on Nov. 5, coming in second. He added a third-place finish against CSU Bakersfield on Oct. 29.
Four Tigers will enter the 1650 Free, paced by Chandler's season-best time of 9:29.91. In his first-ever meet as a Tiger, Chandler won the 1650 Free at the Pacific Invite on Oct. 14. He added a second-place finish at the Quad Meet on Nov. 4. Zlotoff (9:42.44) came in second to Chandler at the Pacific Invite.
Simkovic will look to defend his title in the 200 Back, entering the race with a season-best time of 1:47.32. He has won the 200 Back three times this season and finished sixth at the prestigious Arena Invitational on Nov. 19. Presswood (1:53.93) came on at the end of the season, taking third at the Tri Meet on Jan. 21 before finishing second against UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 27.
The 100 Free will see eight Tigers compete as Rogers' time of 46.40 is his third team-best time of the year. His best showing was a third-place finish at the Quad Meet on Nov. 5. Moore (46.55) took third in two different meets while Fleming (46.89) had his best performance against UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 27, taking seventh in an exhibition swim.
Pacific will enter three swimmers in the 200 Breast, led by LeRoy's mark of 2:05.97. He finished second against both CSU Bakersfield on Oct. 29 and UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 27. Ward (2:06.20) finished ahead of LeRoy in both of those races, giving him a pair of first-place finishes on the year. He added a second-place showing at the Tri Meet on Jan. 21.
Wilson leads four Tigers in the 200 Fly, owning a season-best time of 1:52.71. He had his best showing against CSU Bakersfield on Oct. 29, coming in second. Junior Sean Dunnigan (1:53.91) came in third at the Tri Meet on Jan. 21 while Barton (1:54.68) took fourth against UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 27.
