Pacific Baseball Opens USD Tournament Against No. 21 Oregon State Thursday

The Pacific baseball team will face a fifth-straight ranked team at 2 pm on Thursday, opening a weekend tournament in San Diego against the Oregon State Beavers, ranked No. 21 in the Baseball America Top 25.

The Tigers (0-4) meet the Beavers at USD's Cunningham Stadium. On Friday, Pacific will take on co-host San Diego at 2 pm, and then visit Tony Gwynn Stadium for a Friday meeting with San Diego State at 6 pm. On Sunday, the Tigers face the USD Toreros, back at Cunningham Stadium, at 11 am.

Pacific opened the season with three games against No. 22 California, before falling in extra innings on Tuesday at home to No. 2 Stanford. The Tigers rallied to erase a 7-4 deficit by scoring a run in each of the seventh, eighth and ninth. Junior DH John Haberman posted four hits in five at bats, and singled home senior RF Allen Riley in the bottom of the ninth to force extra frames.

Against Oregon State, Pacific will start lefty redshirt sophomore Paul Moeller (0-0, 5.40 ERA). Moeller will be making his first start of the year after logging 1.2 innings out of the bullpen in two games against No. 22 Cal.

Saturday's starter is listed as TBA, while senior RHP Chris Larsen gets the nod on Saturday against San Diego State. Larsen is 0-0 with an ERA of 9.00 after tossing 1.2 innings against No. 2 Stanford and 1.1 against No. 22 Cal.

On Sunday, senior RHP John Prato Matthews (0-2, 6.75 ERA)will start against USD after tossing four innings Tuesday. He did not allow a hit to No. 2 Stanford in his first three innings of work, but was saddled with a loss in the 11th inning.
