Pacific Ends Lancer Invite With Two Victories

Feb 18, 2012

What a difference a day makes.

After dropping a pair of contests yesterday, the Pacific women's water polo team rebounded to defeat both Occidental and Fresno Pacific on Day Two of the Lancer Invitational at Cal Baptist.

The Tigers put away Occidental 15-8 after a dominant first half before routing Fresno Pacific 8-2 in the third match-up with the Sunbirds this season.

Pacific improved to 8-4 with the two wins while Occidental and Fresno Pacific fall to 1-2 and 1-11, respectively.

In their first game of the day, the Tigers got on the board early thanks to a goal from senior Kim Kay just 30 seconds into the first quarter. Sophomore Malena Prlain gave Pacific a two-goal lead before Occidental scored its first goal of the match with 3:05 left in the frame. Kay's second goal of the match came at the 2:35 mark, giving the Tigers a 3-1 lead after one.

Kay's goal was the first in a run of seven unanswered that saw Pacific build a 9-1 lead at the end of the second quarter. Sophomore Chelsea Weir tallied on a power-play goal on the Tigers' first possession of the second frame while Kay put away her third goal just 20 seconds later, putting Pacific up 5-1 with 7:22 left. FreshmanNoelle Mann, senior Brittany Lloyd, and sophomore Elise Martin contributed scores to keep the run going before freshman Ashley Pitcock finished the spurt with a score at the 1:03 mark.

Occidental came out of halftime firing, notching a pair of scores early in the third quarter. Freshman Taylor Adair answered with back-to-back power-play goals to put the Tigers back up by eight, 11-3, with 3:55 left in the frame. The two squads would trade a pair of goals the rest of the way as scores from Kay and Martin kept Pacific on top 13-6 at the end of the third.

Mann found the back of the cage on a 6-on-5 situation 30 seconds into the fourth quarter, giving the Tigers a 14-6 lead. After an Occidental goal, Prlain would score an advantage goal with 3:10 left to play, securing the win. A late Occidental goal resulted in the final margin.

Kay led all scorers with four goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Michele Relton blocked nine shots in 3.75 quarters of play. She added three steals and three assists.

Occidental was led by Tessa Bailey-Findley's hat trick. Goalkeeper Rachel Adeleye recorded four saves.

Pacific's second game of the day saw the Tigers dominate defensively en route to an easy win. The Tigers struck first on a goal from freshman Brydie Pye at the 5:51 mark, but Fresno Pacific answered 30 seconds later to tie the match at 1-1. Martin would put one past the Sunbirds' keeper with just nine seconds left, giving Pacific a 2-1 lead after the first quarter.

Weir notched the only goal in the second quarter for either team, finding the back of the cage at the 7:13 mark. Neither squad was able to generate much offense in the frame as the Tigers took a 3-1 lead into intermission.

Sophomore Rebecca Wright notched Pacific's third consecutive goal one minute into the third frame before Martin recorded her second and third goals of the match to give the Tigers a 6-1 advantage with eight minutes left to play.

Martin's fourth goal came 30 seconds into the final frame, extending Pacific's run to six straight. Prlain's power-play goal gave the Tigers their largest lead of the game, 8-1, with 4:53 left to play. A late Fresno Pacific goal ended a near-26 minute scoring drought.

Martin led all scorers with four goals. Relton recorded 11 blocks in a complete-game effort.
