Swimming Concludes First Night Of MPSF Championships
Pacific's fourth-place finish in the women's 200 medley relay highlighted a rough first night at the 2012 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships, held at East Los Angeles Community College.
Junior Becca Wyant, junior Mallory McGowan, freshman Dekel Shahaf, and sophomore MaryElla Randall swam phenomenal splits on their way to a fourth-place finish in the night's first relay. Their team time of 1:42.25 was mere hundreths of a second behind the third-place team. It also topped the previous season-best time.
The men's team followed, only their showing in the 200 medley relay ended with a disqualification as one of the swimmers left his block early. The group, consisting of freshman Cooper Rogers, junior Jonathan Alves, senior Kevin Byers, and freshman Casey Fleming, had solid split times that flashed their potential for a high finish.
Like the men's 200 medley relay group, the women's 800 free relay was also disqualified for having one of its swimmers jump in too soon. Freshman Bo Cameron, sophomore Hayley Shillington, sophomore Shannon Van Konynenburg, and senior Jayme Swalin entered with a seed time of 7:34.87, which ranked fifth among the nine entries.
The men's 800 free relay team, made up of sophomore Oliver Simkovic, junior RJ Barton, sophomore Adam Sharp, and freshman Brandon Chandler, finished eighth with a team time of 6:45.82. The mark topped the team's previous season best by more than 10 seconds.
Both squads sit in ninth place after the first night of competition. The women are tied with Cal Poly with 30 points while the men earned 20 points.
The conference meet resumes tomorrow morning with individual preliminaries beginning at 10:30 a.m. Clickhere for live results.
