Tigers Complete Undefeated Weekend With Rout Of Fresno Pacific

Feb 5, 2012

The Pacific women's water polo team got hattricks from three of its newcomers en route to a dominant 13-5 victory over Fresno Pacific Sunday, Feb. 5, as part of the Pacific Invitational at the Chris Kjeldsen Aquatics Complex.

Sophomore Rebecca Wright and freshmen Taylor Adair and Brydie Pye notched hattricks for the Tigers, winners of five straight matches.

Pacific sprinted out to a 3-0 lead thanks to a pair of Wright scores and one from Pye. Fresno Pacific broke through with a goal at the 3:05 mark, but the Tigers went back on top by three on Adair's first goal of the match. As the game clock wound down, Pye let a shot go from halfcourt that beat the Sunbirds' keeper, giving Pacific a 5-1 lead after the first quarter.

The two squads would trade goals in the second frame as both teams struggled to find the back of the net. Fresno Pacific pulled to within three on a goal with 1:33 left in the half before the Tigers responded with a score from sophomore Elise Martin on the ensuing possession.

Fresno Pacific refused to go quietly, scoring early in the third quarter before notching a second goal midway through the period, drawing to within two. Wright would find the back of the cage for a third time before the Sunbirds scored their third goal of the quarter, reducing the Tigers' lead to 7-5 with two minutes left in the frame. Pacific regained some momentum on goals from senior Kim Kay and sophomore Malena Prlain to end the quarter ahead 9-5.

The visitors tallied their sixth goal of the match on a penalty shot at the 7:06 mark of the fourth quarter, but Pacific would net the final four goals of the match to seal the win. Adair scored twice down the stretch along with Pye and Martin.

Sophomore goalkeeper Michele Relton completed her phenomenal weekend in the cage with an 11-save outing. Her counterpart, Kelsey Harvey, blocked 14 shots for Fresno Pacific.
