Women's Water Polo Outscores Fresno Pacific, 9-4
Facing the same opponent for the second time in a week, the Pacific women's water polo team used a strong first half to defeat Fresno Pacific, 9-4, Saturday, Feb. 11, in a nonconference match at the Sunnyside Aquatics Complex.
The Tigers (6-2) have now won six consecutive matches while Fresno Pacific (0-8) remained winless on the year with the loss.
Pacific took a 1-0 lead early in the first quarter on Prlain's first goal at the 5:48 mark. The Tigers would strike twice more during the frame as freshman Taylor Adair scored midway through the period while Prlain tallied her second goal of the match with 1:30 remaining. Pacific's defense shut out the Sunbirds in the first quarter, marking the fifth time the Tigers have not ceded a score in a quarter this season.
Freshman Kelsey Carter extended Pacific's lead to four, 4-0, at the 7:07 mark of the second quarter. Sophomore Michele Relton kept Fresno Pacific scoreless, saving a penalty shot, before freshman Brydie Pyefound the back of the cage with 6:16 remaining. The Tigers would go up by six on sophomore Elise Martin's goal at the 1:04 mark, giving Pacific it's largest lead of the match. The hosts finally broke through with 46 seconds left, ending their near-16 minute scoring drought. A goal from freshman Ashley Pitcock came with 30 seconds remaining, giving Pacific a 7-1 lead heading into intermission.
Fresno Pacific stepped up the intensity on both sides of the pool in the third quarter, recording two goals while shutting the Tigers out. Pacific ended its scoreless stretch on Prlain's goal at the 6:32 mark of the fourth quarter, going back up by five, 8-3. The Sunbirds would tally for a fourth time with 4:16 remaining but Adair sealed the win for Pacific on a goal at the 2:58 mark, resulting in the final margin of victory.
Relton had another solid showing in the cage for the Tigers, recording 12 saves and two steals. During Pacific's six-game winning streak, she has yet to allow more than six goals in a game.
Fresno Pacific was paced by Krista Loper's two goals. Goalkeeper Kelsey Harvey blocked 14 shots.
Up next for Pacific is the Lancer Tournament over Feb. 17 and 18. The tournament, hosted by Cal Baptist, sees the Tigers battle No. 2 USC in the first of four matches. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
