Women's Water Polo Tops Wagner, 7-5

Feb 5, 2012

A late goal from sophomore Elise Martin stopped a fourth-quarter Wagner charge and gave the Pacific women's water polo team a 7-5 victory Sunday, Feb. 5, in a Pacific Invitational match at the Chris Kjeldsen Aquatics Complex.

Sophomores Elise Martin and Malena Prlain combined for six of Pacific's seven goals as both recorded hat tricks.

Both squads struggled to score early as the Tigers (4-2) took a 1-0 lead into the second quarter on a penalty goal from Prlain. Sophomore goalkeeper Michele Relton had a fantastic first frame, recording seven of her 13 saves in the first eight minutes of play.

Wagner (2-4) evened the score two minutes into the second frame, but a power-play goal from freshmanBrydie Pye put the Tigers back on top with 3:12 left in the half. Pacific would extend its lead to two on a penalty score from Martin, taking a 3-1 advantage into intermission.

Prlain's second goal of the match came just one minute into the third quarter, giving the Tigers their largest lead of the day at 4-1. The visitors would not go away, however, as Wagner ripped off consecutive goals to pull to within one at the 3:03 mark. Pacific answered with a run of its own, getting goals from Martin and Prlain to go up 6-3 at the end of the third.

Continuing to hang around, the Seahawks managed to sneak one past Relton on a 6-on-5 situation before netting a second goal with 3:55 remaining in the match. With Pacific clinging to a one-goal lead, head coach Megan Thomson called timeout, after which Martin promptly scored to give the Tigers the cushion they needed. Wagner was unable to overcome the two-goal margin as Pacific held on for the win.

Wagner got its five goals from five different players. Laura Karbach notched 14 saves in a complete-game effort for the Seahawks.

Pacific is back in action later today when it faces Fresno Pacific at 4 p.m.
