Tigers Drop Women's Water Polo Match To No. 2 California

No. 2 California used a 5-1 run to break open a one-goal match and emerged with a 9-4 victory over the Pacific women's water polo team Sunday, Jan. 22, at the Spartan Invitational at San Jose State.

The Tigers now sit at 0-2 on the year after facing a pair of top-five opponents. The Golden Bears improved to 3-0 with the win.

California opened the match scoring back-to-back goals to take a quick 2-0 lead. Senior Kim Kay put Pacific on the board thanks to a power-play goal at the 3:13 mark of the first quarter. After a third California goal, sophomore Elise Martin again brought the Tigers to within one on a score with one minute left in the frame.

The Golden Bears turned up their defensive pressure in the second quarter, shutting out the Tigers while notching a pair of goals to take a 5-2 lead into the break. California notched its third consecutive goal early in the third quarter to go up by four. Kay again found the back of the cage at the 6:48 mark for her second goal of the match, but the Golden Bears tallied two more goals in the third quarter to take a commanding 8-3 lead into the final frame.

Sophomore Chelsea Weir put away her first goal of the season on a 6-on-5 situation with 49 seconds remaining in the contest, bringing Pacific to within four. California would put the game away on a late goal from Marisa Purcell, resulting in the final margin.

Kay's two goals on six attempts paced the Tigers. Wier needed just one shot to find the back of the cage while Martin was 1-3 from the field.

Sophomore goalkeeper Michele Relton played all four quarters in the cage for Pacific, blocking seven shots.

California had three players record two goals apiece. Three goalkeepers saw time for the Golden Bears with Lindsay Dorst and Briana Lippert recording one save apiece.

The Tigers conclude play at the Spartan Invitational this afternoon when they will face Santa Clara at 2:15 p.m.
