McGowan Named MPSF Women's Swimmer Of The Week

Jan 11, 2012

Junior Mallory McGowan has been named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Women's Swimmer of the Week after her impressive performance at then-No. 6 Stanford last Saturday, Jan. 7. It is the first weekly honor for the Tigers this season and McGowan's first of her career.

"I am very excited to receive this award," McGowan said. "I felt really relaxed going into the Stanford meet, and my race felt good. The motivation my teammates gave me was awesome and we really pulled together."

The junior from Colusa claimed first place in the 100 Breast behind a time of 1:05.42, beating Stanford's second-place finisher by nearly one second. The win was McGowan's third 100 Breast title on the year. She also finished third in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:25.38 and swam a leg as part of Pacific's fourth-place 200 Medley Relay squad (1:48.12).

"Mallory has put in a lot of work the last two years," interim head coach Gus Barrios said. "She has established herself as one of the top breast strokers in the conference and her hard work is starting to show."

The women are back at home this Saturday, Jan. 14, where they will compete against conference foe UC Davis in a dual meet. The meet is set to get underway at 1 p.m.
