Pacific WWP Defeats Fraser Valley In Exhibition

Jan 21, 2012

The Pacific women's water polo team used a balanced scoring attack to defeat Fraser Valley (Canada) 12-9 in an exhibition match Sunday, Jan. 21, as part of the Spartan Invitational at San Jose State.

Six different Tigers put goals past Fraser Valley's goalkeeper. Sophomore Elise Martin led the squad with four scores. Right behind her was senior Kim Kay with three and freshman Noelle Mann with two. Sophomore Malena Prlain and freshmen Kelsey Carter and Brydie Pye added one goal apiece.

Fraser Valley struck first on a goal from Stephanie Watson at the 5:46 mark of the first quarter. Pacific knotted the match one minute later on Kay's first score and would take a 3-1 lead into the second frame behind Kay's second goal and a goal from Pye.

Prlain extended the Tigers' lead to three with a score just 30 seconds into the second quarter. The two teams would trade a pair of goals as Martin and Carter both scored, putting Pacific up 6-3 with 3:21 left in the first half. Fraser Valley netted two of the next three goals to trim the deficit to two, but Martin put away a five-meter penalty shot with seven seconds left to give the Tigers an 8-5 lead at the break.

Pacific would go up by four on Martin's third goal at the 6:20 mark of the third quarter. After a Fraser Valley goal, the Tigers finished a pair of chances, one by Mann and one by Martin, to take an 11-6 lead into the final frame.

Mann found the back of the cage for a second time midway through the fourth quarter, giving Pacific its largest lead of the match at 12-6. Fraser Valley tallied the last three goals of the match but it was not enough as the Tigers emerged victorious.

Martin was a perfect four-of-four while Mann needed just two shots to score her two goals.

Sophomore goalkeeper Michele Relton notched six saves in four quarters of play.

Fraser Valley was led by Danika Kotylak's four goals. Goalkeeper Sam Hendriksen recorded just one save in a complete-game effort.

The Tigers will meet No. 2 California at 9:15 a.m. tomorrow morning in their second and final day of action at the Spartan Invitational. Fans can visit the tournament's official website for results and box scores.
