Baseball Travels To K-State For Three-Game Set
The Pacific Tigers hit the road for a three-game baseball series at Kansas State, starting Friday. Pacific will open the series with the Wildcats Tointon Family Stadium in Manhattan, Kansas at 1 pm PT, (3 pm CT) on Friday, and play game two Saturday at noon PT, with the series concluding at 10 am PT on Sunday.
The Tigers are hitting .389 in their last three games (38 for 103), tying a season-high at San Diego State with 13 hits, and shattering that mark Tuesday in a 13-10 win over Sacramento State. Every Tiger in the lineup had a hit on Tuesday, including five Tigers picking up multi-hit games. Senior LF Brett Christopher hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left for his seventh career long ball.
Pacific (1-8) will open the series with freshman RHP Michael Benson on the mound. The Placentia. Calif., native is 0-1 on the season with a 3.00 ERA. In his first appearance of the year, Benson tossed six innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits in a loss to San Diego on Feb. 24. Benson struck out in the quality start, departing down 2-1 after six.
Kansas State (3-4) will counter with senior RHP Matt Applegate, who is 0-1 with a 5.93 ERA on the year in 13.2 innings. Applegate started at USD in the first game of the day against the Toreros on Feb. 24, going 6.1 innings with six hits and five earned runs allowed.
On Saturday, the junior LHP John Haberman is scheduled to start. He is 0-0 on the season with a 3.38 ERA. In his last outing, at San Diego State on Feb. 25, Haberman struck out a career-best nine batters, including five in a row. He left after 7.1 innings of work, departing with a 2-1 lead.
Kansas State's Joe Flattery gets the nod in game two. The 6-3 junior lefty is 1-1 with a 8.31 ERA on the year. At San Diego State on Feb. 25, he tossed 5.1 innings, allowing three earned on six hits earning the win.
Sunday's finale will feature Pacific LHP Kyle Crawford, who enters with a 5.11 ERA and a 0-0 record. In 12.1 innings pitched, Crawford has struck out nine. His last time out, he went 5.1 innings against USD on Feb. 26, allowing 3 earned runs on six hits. He left the game with the Tigers holding a 4-1 lead in the sixth.
The Wildcats will counter with RHP Kayvon Bahramzadeh. The 6-1 senior is 1-0on the year with a 3.12 ERA. He earned a win over San Diego State on Feb. 23, going 6.0 innings and allowing one earned run on four hits.
The series pits two squads with potent offenses against each other, as the Wildcats are hitting .282 on the season, while the Tigers check in at .287. K-State averages 5.57 runs per game, while allowing 8.14. Pacific is averaging 4.67 runs a game, while allowing 7.56.
Following the series, the Tigers will return to California for a mid-week contest on Tuesday at San Francisco before opening a three-game home series against Creighton on Klein Family Field next weekend.
