Creighton Tops Pacific Baseball In Game Three

Mar 11, 2012

The Creighton Bluejays took the rubber game of a three-game series over Pacific baseball Sunday at Klein Family Field, 12-2. Pacific junior 3B Dustin Torchio finished the series eight-for-13 with eight RBI with a two-for-four day Sunday.

Redshirt freshman first baseman Erik Lockwood hit his first career home run as part of a two-for-three day and senior CF Brett Christopher added a single.

Creighton (7-6) tallied two runs in the first off spot-starter Travis Lumby (1-3). Pressed into service after starting on Tuesday, Lumby allowed two runs in the first and departed after 2.1 innings of work, with three earned on his ledger.

After junior DH Tyger Pederson walked and Lockwood singled in the bottom of the third, Torchio delivered an RBI single to right to cut the margin to 4-1.

But Creighton answered with a four-run fourth, as Bluejays' DH Scott Thornburg posted an RBI single and CF Mike Gerber and SS Alex Staehely each provided RBI doubles off RHP Byrce Lombardi.

Tigers' senior RHP Jared Wagner escaped a jam in the fourth, and allowed one run in 2.2 innings of work and freshman RHP Mike Hager tossed three innings of one-hit ball to close out the game.

Pacific picked up a run back in the bottom of the fifth on Lockwood's solo shot to left field, but that was all Creighton RHP Nick Musec would allow, going seven innings allowing five hits and recording a pair of strikeouts to improve to 2-0 on the season.

The Tigers fall to 3-13 on the year and will visit Spokane, Wash. for a three-game series at Gonzaga starting Friday.
