Women's Water Polo: Martin Earns Big West Player Of The Week Honors
Sophomore Elise Martin has been named the Big West Conference's Player of the Week for the week of March 19, 2012, announced today by the conference office.
"I am very honored to be named the conference's Player of the Week," Martin said. "It means a lot, especially after this past weekend and seeing how far our team has come and how many different players are stepping up in every game."
The true definition of a utility player, Martin had an outstanding weekend all over the pool for Pacific as the Tigers dropped a pair of contests to highly-ranked foes at the Chris Kjeldsen Aquatics Complex. Against No. 11 UC Davis on Sunday, Martin impacted every facet of the match, notching three goals, two of which came in the crucial fourth quarter that saw the Tigers' comeback attempt fall just short. She also tallied three assists, three steals, and three drawn ejections in the match. Martin opened the weekend with a two-goal performance versus No. 13 Maryland, giving her a team-best five goals on the weekend.
"Elise has been a consistent force on our team the entire season," head coach Megan Thomson said. "She was a key component of our near-upsets of two highly ranked opponents, so it is good to see her get recognized."
For the season, Martin leads Pacific with 42 goals, 22 assists, 37 steals, and 10 field blocks. It is the second such honor in Martin's two-year career at Pacific. She was named the league's Player of the Week last season, as well.
The Tigers open Big West play this Saturday, Mar. 28, when long-time rival UC Davis comes to Stockton. The match is free to the public as part of Pacific's annual Community Day event, and will be followed by the team's annual alumni match and the first annual Wine & Water Polo Benefit that evening.
