Offensive Explosion Nets Matson Weekly Award

Mar 5, 2012

Enjoying the friendly confines of Bill Simoni Field for the first time in 2012, senior Nicole Matsonmade the most of her first home stand of the season by netting her first Big West Player of the Week award of the year on March 5.  Matson exploded offensively for the Tigers as Pacific hosted the Louisville Slugger Invitational to start its home schedule.  The award was the first of the season for a Pacific field player and the second weekly award for the Tigers after freshman Dani Bonnet earned pitcher of the week honors the week before.  It is the third time in Matson's career the senior has earned the award.

Putting together arguablly her best weekend of her stellar career, Matson helped guide the Tigers to a second place finish at the Louisville Slugger Invitational and a 3-2 record over the weekend.  On day one, Matson had what can only be described as an epic showing at the plate as the slugging shortstop blasted three home runs and drove in nine to lead the Tigers to wins over Sacramento State (9-6) and Delaware (6-1).

Against the Hornets, Matson posted her first-ever five RBI day as she went 2-for-2 with a three-run home run and a two-RBI single.  In the night cap, Matson one-upped herself by crushing a pair of home runs including clearing the Tigers' brand-new scoreboard in left field.

After striking fear into the hearts of the opposition's pitching, Matson got it done on the base paths to take advantage of five free passes and two hit by pitch.  Using the free bases to the Tigers' advantage, the senior swiped five bases on the weekend to put herself into scoring position and push her season total to a team-best six stolen bases.  With her legs and her bat, Matson posted eight runs scored on the year improve her season total to 14 on the year.

For the season, Matson leads the both the team and the Big West in RBI (16) and slugging (.684) while sitting second in home runs (5) and runs scored (14).

Matson and the Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday, March 6, when they travel to San Jose, Calif. to take on the Spartans of San Jose State. The teams will meet for a single game scheduled for 2:00 pm.
