Conservatory Student in Finals of the Prestigious Pacific Music Society Competition

Mar 19, 2012

University of the Pacific student Yelena Dyachek has made the finals of the Pacific Musical Society competition. The competition is considered to be one of the most competitive contests for young musicians on the West Coast.

Dyachek, a junior in the Conservatory of Music's vocal performance program, currently is performing the lead role of Pamina in "The Magic Flute" on Pacific's Stockton campus.

"I am nervous about this, but also extremely excited to have made it so far in the competition," Dyachek, 20, said. "I must credit all of my professors at Pacific who helped me fine-tune my talents and also gave me the encouragement to try out for this world-renowned contest."

"This is an amazing accomplishment for someone to achieve so early in their career," said Professor Daniel Ebbers, director of the Pacific Opera Institute. "It is a fairly high profile competition and Yelena was selected as one of three finalists in her age group."

The Pacific Musical Society was founded in San Francisco in 1910 and runs a number of programs that introduces young students to music and scholarships to encourage a musical career. The competition is held annually. Past winners of the competition include famous tenor Jess Thomas, pianist Roy Bogas, who later was named a Tchaikovsky Competition Laureate, world-renowned pianist Leon Fleisher, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Del Tredici, and pianist Pierre Salinger, who later became a U.S. Senator.

The finals for the competition will be held March 25 at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. The winners will be announced in June.
