Pitchers Duel Goes Against The Tigers On Saturday Night

Mar 17, 2012

Locked in a duel on the mound, sophomore LHP Kyle Crawford found himself on the wrong end of a battle with the Bulldogs as the Pacific softball team suffered a 2-0 loss on Saturday, March 17.

For eight innings, Crawford battled through the Bulldog lineup only to see his counterpart on the mound, Marco Gonzales, match his every effort.  In a test of two sophomore lefties, Gonzales got the better of Crawford as the Zags' starter threw a complete game shutout of the Tigers to improve to 3-0 on the season.  For Crawford, the game turned on just two innings as the Bulldogs were able to come up with a pair of timely two out knocks to plate the only two runs of the game.

In the second, the Tigers' sophomore gave up a pair of one out singles to the bottom of the order before Erik Lane turned the first hit into a run with a single of his own up the middle.  In the seventh, it was a single by the nine hole hitter that came back to bite Crawford as a balk and knock by turned into the second run of the game.  Overall, Crawford gave up 10 hits in the contest, but scattered just four hits in all but the second and seventh.  He added a pair of strike outs and walked just one while dropping to 1-2 on the season in his fifth start of the year.

Even with Gonzales in command throughout the game for the Bulldogs on the mound, the Tigers were not without their chances to bring home runs in the contest.  Pacific threatened with a runner in scoring positon in five of the nine innings of action including putting its leadoff batter on base in four of nine innings.  The Tigers best chance of the game came in the sixth inning when sophomore 2B Curtis Gomez laced a double off the wall in left to start the inning, only to be left watching the action from second to end the inning.  Gomez finished his night with two of the Tigers' five hits as the only Pacific batter to record mulitple hits.

The Tigers will finish its series in Spokane on Sunday, March 18, when they take on the Bulldogs for the third and final game of the series at the Patterson Baseball Complex.  The game is scheduled for a 1:00 pm start.
