Tigers Fall In Big West Tournament Quarterfinals
The Pacific men's basketball team dropped a 72-52 decision to UC Santa Barbara in the quarterfinal round of the Big West Tournament at the Honda Center on Thursday, March 8. The Tigers finish the season 11-19 overall, while the Gauchos improved to 19-9 with the victory.
Pacific took a 7-2 lead in the early going after a three-pointer by junior Markus Duran. UCSB hit three three-pointers in a 20-7 run over the next seven minutes to take a 22-14 lead with 10:39 to play in the half. A trey by junior Lorenzo McCloud brought the Tigers back within four (23-19), but the Gauchos again pulled ahead by a count of 30-20 with 5:11 to play. McCloud continued his hot shooting, hitting back-to-back three-pointers to bring the Tigers within 30-26 with 4:16 to play. The Gauchos out-scored the Tigers 13-3 the rest of the way, with the lone points another trey from McCloud.
The Tigers were stuck on 29 for the first four minutes of the second half, as UCSB was able to build a 51-29 lead. Junior Travis Fulton scored Pacific's first basket of the second half to make it 51-31 with 15:44 left. The Gauchos surged ahead again, taking a 67-38 lead with 7:26 to go. Down the stretch, the Tigers were able to cut into the lead as a three-pointer by junior Jordan Turner capped the scoring at 72-52.McCloud led the Tigers with 14 points and a career-high four three-pointers. Fulton and junior Colin Beatty each had a team-high six rebounds. The Tigers shot 38.9 percent from the field for the game, while the Gauchos were at 45.6 percent. Committing 15 turnovers, the Tigers were outscored 25-6 on points off of turnovers.
