Local Artists Challenged to Immortalize Stockton’s Superheroes

Fantastic Four Drawing Contest to Draw Attention to Stockton’s Comic Book History
Jun 7, 2012

Many are familiar with the legend of Marvel Comics characters "The Fantastic Four." Four astronauts were exposed to cosmic rays during an accident in outer space that caused them to mutate into superheroes with extraordinary abilities.

But what many don't know is that during the accident that exposed their ship to the rays, they lost control of their vehicle and crash landed outside of - wait for it - Stockton, California. At least they did in the 1986 restart of the series (they originally crash landed in 1961 outside of the fictional Central City).

In honor of Stockton's historic connection to the comic book world, Stockton's very own Stockton-Con - a pop-culture convention that will feature comic book artists, local artists, gaming tournaments, and much more - will host an all-ages art contest where contestants must show off their best representation of "World's Greatest" Fantastic Four poster. Any medium will be accepted, including digital creations not exceeding 25 megabytes in size.

"A lot of people don't realize that Stockton has been immortalized in comic book history, and we are hoping that this contest will open a lot of people's eyes to the fact that many famous artists have visited our wonderful city," said Mike Millerick, director of Stockton-Con.

Prizes for the contest include being featured on the covers of the Stockton-Con program, professional framing for an entry, and a professional Prismacolor pen set. All entries will be displayed on the Stockton-Con Facebook page and the winning-entries will be selected by Facebook fans.

All winning and honorable mention entries will be reproduced in the event's program, which will be held Aug. 5 in the Alex G. Spanos Center on the University of the Pacific's Stockton campus.

Entries are due by July 1, 2012 and can be e-mailed to stocktonconartcontest@gmail.com. For a full list of rules, visit the official Stockton-Con website at Stocktoncon.com.
