    Erdelyi Earns MPSF Weekly Honor

    Nov 5, 2012

Junior Balazs Erdelyi was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week after scoring four goals in each of Pacific Men's Water Polo's road wins this past weekend, the league office announced Monday, Nov. 5.

The Hungarian attacker opened the weekend with four scores in the Tigers' 14-12 win at UC Irvine last Friday. He scored his third goal with just five seconds left in the first half to give Pacific an 8-6 advantage heading into intermission. Coming out of the break, he notched his fourth score to spot the Tigers a three-goal lead, one they would never relinquish en route to the victory.

"Balazs is having a phenomenal season and is very deserving of this honor," head coach James Graham said. "For him to score the game-winner against Long Beach that punched our ticket to the MPSF Tournament was huge, and it shows the kind of impact he is having on our team, both as a scorer and as a leader. He should certainly be in the conversation for the Cutino Award come season's end."

Sunday saw Erdelyi again record four scores, none more important than his game-winning goal in sudden victory overtime, giving Pacific a hard-fought 14-13 win over Long Beach State. His third goal of the match gave the Tigers a lead at the beginning of the first overtime period, but the 49ers would answer to force a sudden victory showdown.

Erdelyi has had a spectacular season for Pacific thus far, having recorded a league-best 65 goals in 17 games. His 3.82 goals-per-game average also tops the conference. He has 15 multi-goal games on the year, including four four-goal performances, three five-goal showings and a pair of six-goal outings. He scored a career-high nine goals against Santa Clara back on Oct. 12.
