Pacific Women's Hoops Faces Cal State East Bay in Sunday Exhibition

Nov 2, 2012

The Pacific women's basketball team opens the 2012-13 season with an exhibition on Sunday against Division II Cal State East Bay. Tip-off is set for 2:30 pm, prior to the men's team taking on Chico State.

The Tigers and Pioneers are meeting in preseason for the second time in three years. Pacific opened the 2010-11 season with an exhibition win over CSEB, 67-44. Current senior Kendall Rodriguez scored 12 points, while fellow current senior Erica McKenzie handed out six assists in that contest, which opened their sophomore campaigns.

Pacific is officially 5-0 against the Pioneers all-time, with the last meeting coming in 1981.

The Tigers are looking to build off a second round appearance in the WNIT last season. Pacific's win over Arizona State in the first round was the first post-season tournament win for the program.

After turning in a 18-14 season in 2011-12, the Tigers were picked to finish second in the Big West according to the preseason conference media poll. Pacific gathered five first-place votes and 156 total points in the poll; one first place vote and two total points shy of Cal State Northridge. Pacific finished third in the Big West standings with a 9-7 record last season.

Rodriguez was named the Big West preseason All-Conference team in a vote by the media (only a first team was selected). College Sports Madness named Rodriguez its' preseason Big West Player of the Year, placing her on the First Team. McKenzie was named to the publication's Second Team.

"I can't wait," said McKenzie about Sunday's game. "After 30 days of beating each other up every single day in practice, we're really excited to play someone else."

Cal State East Bay finished last season 12-17, with a 9-13 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

The Tigers will open the 2012-13 regular season at Seattle on November 9, in a 7 pm contest. Pacific will visit  Eastern Washington on Nov. 11 (1 pm tipoff) before returning to the Alex G. Spanos Center for the home opener on Nov. 15 against Nevada.
