Seniors Honored As Swimming Wins Tri-Meet
Competing for the first time in three weeks, both of Pacific Swimming's squads picked up wins over visiting UC Santa Cruz and Fresno Pacific in a tri-meet Saturday, Nov. 17. The Tigers' men's team outscored Fresno Pacific, 168-93, and UC Santa Cruz, 202-60. The women's squad defeated the Sunbirds, 153-104, and the Banana Slugs, 189-69.
Pacific's women's team was simply dominant on the day, collecting 10 event titles and 26 top-three finishes. Senior Jenna Chaplin, junior Hayley Shillington and freshman Cristina Mardones were the three Tigers who won multiple events. Chaplin won the 200 Fly (2:10.23) and the 500 Free (5:13.99, Shillington took first in the 100 Back (59.44) and the 100 Free (52.51) and Mardones placed first in the 200 Breast (2:21.00) and swam the fastest time in the 400 IM (4:32.50).
Junior Shannon Van Konynenburg won the 200 Free (1:55.02) while senior Mallory McGowan claimed the 50 Free (24.59). Sophomore Bo Cameron and freshman Dekel Shahaff accounted for the Tigers' other two wins as Cameron finished first in the 200 Back (2:10.21) and Shahaff recorded the best time in the 100 Fly (58.88).
Pacific went 1-2-3 in the 100 Back, the 100 Free and the 200 Back. Seniors Allie Vetterlein (59.67) and Becca Wyant (1:00.01) backed up Shillington in the 100 Back while Vetterlein (53.73) and Bugglin (55.72) placed second and third, respectively, in the 100 Free. The 200 Back saw sophomores Shannon Mack (2:13.68) and Annie Sumioka (2:17.79) finished behind Cameron.
The men's team was equally impressive, racking up 10 first-place finishes and a total of 24 top-three placements. Junior Oliver Simkovic and sophomore Cooper Rogers both accounted for a pair of event titles to pace the men. Simkovic won the 200 Back (1:55.70) and the 400 IM (4:12.66) while Rogers came in first in the 100 Back (51.23) and the 100 Free (46.53).
Senior Zachary Zlotoff finished first in the 1000 Free (9:46.71) while sophomores Cameron Franke and Casey Fleming won the 100 Breast (59.02) and the 50 Free (21.73), respectively. Senior Jonathan Alves, sophomore Brandon Presswood and freshman Hanaya Brasali also earned event titles. Alves won the 200 Breast (2:13.36), Presswood took the 500 Free (4:43.66) and Brasali claimed the 100 Fly (52.13).
The men's squad recorded three 1-2-3 finishes, taking the top three spots in the 200 Back, the 200 Breast and the 400 IM. Behind Simkovic in the 200 Back were Brasali (1:59.06) and sophomore Jeff Peters (2:04.77). Sophomore Cody Burkard (2:15.32) and Franke backed up Alves in the 200 Breast while sophomore Brandon Chandler (4:17.21) and senior Sean Dunnigan (4:19.48) took second and third in the 400 IM.
The women picked up a win in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:46.46 and took second in the 400 Free Relay (3:43.89). The men won the 200 Medley Relay (1:34.87) and swam the fastest time in the 400 Free Relay (3:07.75).
The Tigers will take another break from competition before traveling to Las Vegas, Nev., for the UNLV Invitational from Dec. 15-17. The team will then stay in Las Vegas for a week to train for the remainder of their schedule.
