Letter Regarding Incidents Targeting Members of the LGBTQIA Community in the Past Week
Dear Colleagues and Friends,
At the end of last week and early this week, the Pacific Bias Response Team received reports that a few members of our Pacific community had been targeted because of their gender identities and/or expression and experienced the related hurt and impact that came from these acts of bias. These acts are not congruent with who we are -and who we aspire to be - as a learning community, a community where all members are respected, recognized, valued, and have the ability to fully participate and be successful.
In response to these acts of bias, we invite you to join us and members of the PRIDE Center, the PRIDE Alliance, the Gender Umbrella student organization, the Division of Student Life, and the Enough is Enough campaign committee in a visible show of care and solidarity by actively participating in Spirit Day this Friday, October 19, 2012.
Spirit Day is an annual day in October when millions of Americans wear purple to speak out against bullying and to show their support for individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT).
We hope that you will choose to wear your favorite purple attire or accessory as a way of visibly demonstrating your commitment to a University community that is inclusive of all members and that is not tolerant of bullying. If you happen not to have purple handy, we will have purple accessories available for your perusal and pick up in Student Life, 1st floor of Hand Hall, beginning on Thursday afternoon.
Please also plan on participating in other Spirit Day activities that will be occurring throughout the day on the DUC lawn. These activities include an opportunity to "hammer out hate" and to learn more about gender identity, gender expression, and gender variance, and, most important of all, to learn more about who we are as a community.
