Tigers Fall Late In Home Big West Opener
The Pacific women's soccer team dropped its Big West Conference home opener 3-2 against UC Davis on Friday, September 28. The Tigers fell to 3-8-1 on the year and 0-2-1 in league play, while the Aggies improved to 7-5-1 and 2-1-0 in Big West action.
The Tigers fell behind 19 minutes into the match when UC Davis' Sienna Drizin scored on a shot from the left side of the goal. The Tigers evened it up at 1-1 with 28:55 played, when sophomore Mirella Mattos scored off of a pass from freshman Zarette Munoz-Aguilar. The goal was set up by a penalty kick by junior Maricela Padilla that was saved back into play by UC Davis goalkeeper Taylor Jern. The Aggies quickly took the lead back at 2-1 less than a minute later on a penalty kick awarded to UC Davis. Kiele Argente scored on a rebound from her own penalty kick that was saved by Tiger goalkeeper Tashia Long< /a>.
Pacific was playing catch up for a majority of the second half, dominating the field of play and outshooting the Aggies 9-3. Freshman Regina Manneh scored the equalizer on a header that came off of a throw-in from senior Lauren Olvera at the 82:24 mark. It was the first career goal for Manneh. Drizin scored the game-winner for UC Davis at 87:02. She scored on a breakaway after Tiger pass was deflected back.
The match was even in fouls at 13-13 and Pacific held a 6-5 edge in corners. The Tigers outshot UC Davis 16-11.
The Tigers are next with a home match against UC Irvine on Friday, October 12 at 7:00 p.m.
