Baseball Travels to Northridge For Three-Game Set Starting Friday

Apr 25, 2013

The Pacific baseball team opens a three-game Big West series at Cal State Northridge Friday, with an afternoon affair at 3 p.m.

The Tigers swept Northridge last season at Klein Family Field as 2B Tyger Pederson hit .545 in the series and drove in four runs, while OF Taylor Murphy hit .429 with a double and three runs scored. The Tigers' pitching staff allowed six runs in the three-game set, as RHP Mike Hager tossed a complete game victory in a 2-1 game two win, allowing one unearned run.

This season, Pederson is one of a host of hot hitters entering the series for Pacific (10-25). Pederson is hitting .293 in his last 12 games with a pair of RBI and three runs scored. Freshman OF/DH Gio Brusa is hitting .410 in his last 12 games with six RBI and six runs scored. He's reached base at a .531 clip in the span. CF Tyler Sullivan has a .356 average in his last dozen ballgames, with 11 runs scored and six driven in. Sullivan has clubbed four doubles, a triple and a home run in his last 12 games, while stealing five bases.

LHP John Haberman takes the hill in game one Friday. In his last 21 innings, Haberman (1-4) has a 3.43 ERA with 10 strikeouts against just four walks. He's allowed one earned run or less in four of his last five outings, including six innings with on unearned run allowed against Long Beach State on April 5 for his first win of the season.

Northridge (22-18) will send ace LHP Jerry Keel to the mound. Keel has a 2.30 ERA in 62.2 innings, with a 5-1 record and 50 strikeouts against 14 walks. In his last outing, he tossed a complete game with one unearned run allowed in a win over Hawai'i last Friday.

RHP Jake Jenkins gets the ball in game two, Saturday at 1 p.m. The freshman was brilliant in his last outing, going 8.0 innings and allowing just four hits and no walks against No. 21 UC Irvine. Jenkins (0-5) was saddled with the tough-luck loss, as the Anteaters scrapped out a single run to take the ballgame 1-0 last Sunday.

The Matadors will start RHP Calvin Copping in game two. The righty has a 4-3 record with a 3.44 ERA in 52.1 innings on the year. He allowed four earned runs in 5.2 innings in his last outing, a win over Hawai'i on Saturday.

On Sunday's 1 p.m. game three, starting pitchers for each team have yet to be announced.
